Dr Megan Birney is a social psychologist interested in identity processes, intergroup relations, social influence, toxic behaviours, and conspiracy theories.

Biography

Dr Megan Birney joined the University Âé¶¹¾«Ñ¡ as an Associate Professor in 2024. 

Megan completed her undergraduate degree in Psychology and Interdisciplinary Studies (Business Leadership and International Development) at Virginia Tech (USA). After this, she spent time travelling and working before studying an MSc (with distinction) in Social and Organisational Psychology and a PhD in Psychology at the University of Exeter. Her research during this time focused on how perceptions of non-native accents influence the relationship between immigrants and UK citizens. 

After her PhD, Megan worked as a Research Fellow at the University of St. Andrews investigating identity processes within variants of Milgram’s ‘Obedience to Authority’ studies. Before coming to Birmingham, Megan spent 6 years at the University of Chester, and 3 years at Staffordshire University, where she developed and led curriculum in Social Psychology at both Undergraduate and Postgraduate levels.

Megan teaches on the BSc Psychology in Education

  • Supervisor on Psychology and Education Research Project/Dissertation

Postgraduate supervision

Megan is open to supervising PhDs on issues relevant to identity processes, intergroup relations, language, and marginalisation/exclusion.
