Dr Kelvin Ng is an atmospheric scientist who focuses on meteorological and climatological extremes.

Qualifications

  • MSci in Physics with Theoretical Physics (Imperial College London)
  • PhD in Atmospheric Sciences (The University of Hong Kong)

Biography

Dr Kelvin Ng studied Physics with Theoretical Physics at Imperial College London before moving to the University of Hong Kong for his PhD in Atmospheric Sciences, looking at the potential governing factors of tropical cyclone intensity. In 2018, he joined the Unversity 麻豆精选 as a research fellow. In 2023, he joined the Fresh Eyes on CMIP, a task team of Coupled Model Intercomparison Project.

Research

Kelvin works as a research fellow on different projects about the hazards and impacts of meteorological and climatological extremes.

  • INPAIS (NERC funded:2018-2021), which was a collaborative research project with Swiss Re Company Ltd, Beijing branch (industry) and Beijing Normal University to improve parametric insurance thresholds of Typhoons.
  • PRE-CAX (Newton Fund, CSSP-China: 2020-2022) and PRE-CAX2 (Newton Fund, CSSP-China: 2022-2023), which are collaborative research projects with University of Reading to develop a tool to improve the prediction of future meteorological and climatological extremes in China based on statistical and machine learning.
  • Ex-Storms (NERC funded: 2022-2024), which is a collaborative research projects with University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and University of Oxford to deepen our understanding the potential source of predictability of European windstorm on a seasonal timescale.
  • HURACAN (NERC funded: 2023-2026) is a consortisum of multiple universities in the UK, such as Reading, Leeds, etc, and in the US, such as Stony Brook University, Columbia University and Pennsylvania State Univeristy. This project aims to explore the risk posed to Europe and United States by cyclones of tropical origin.

Kelvin also involved in other activities/projects, which concern about the weather forecasting, impact of extreme events and climate change, such as Met Office summer testbed 2023, SR-Hazards (funded by Swiss Re, 2022-2023) and TSLS-CMIP6 (a subproject of the Bristol CMIP6 Data Hackathon).

Other activities

  • Member of the Royal Meteorological Society (RMetS)
  • Member of the European Geosciences Union (EGU)
