Kieran is an environmental scientist with a particular interest in freshwater ecosystems. His research can be divided into two main areas: (1) elucidating the impacts of global change (climate change, land use change and drought) on river ecosystems; and, (2) improving understanding of water quality and biogeochemistry of human modified river catchments (agricultural, urban), with a focus on dissolved organic matter and nutrient dynamics. Cross cutting both these themes is his interest in method development, specifically improving how we model and monitor aquatic ecosystems using mesocosm scale experimentation and in-situ, high-frequency environmental sensing.

Kieran is interested in supervising projects related to environmental sensing in freshwater environments and the impacts of environmental change on river ecosystem structure and function.

Freshwater ecology: environmental stressors (organic pollution, effluents and emerging contaminants), environmental change (climate change, glacier retreat, land use and drought), biomonitoring, alpine river systems, functional traits.

Biogeochemistry; dissolved organic matter dynamics, nutrient dynamics in modified systems (urban/agricultural), environmental sensing, optical sensors, environmental chemistry, river temperature, statistical analysis, environmental monitoring.
