 Although not always easy to achieve in practice, the Care Act introduced the expectation that we should be shifting our focus towards prevention and promoting wellbeing – both as a way of enabling people to have better lives and reducing demand for more intensive (and expensive) social care services.  This Masterclass will focus on findings from new national research, commissioned by the Department of Health and Social Care, which explored how a variety of new approaches to capacity building are being implemented across a number of local authorities – including innovative models of strength-based social work, family engagement and community development. \n
 Jerry Tew is Professor of Mental Health and Social Work at the University Â鶹¾«Ñ¡.  He has a practice background working in both local authorities and the voluntary sector.  His research interests include the development of practice models and frameworks, social perspectives on mental health and recovery, family-inclusive ways of working, and the implementation of personal budgets.  His publications include Social Approaches to Mental Distress and Mental Health Policy and Practice (with Jon Glasby), and he was closely involved in producing the Mental Health Policy Commission Report Investing in a Resilient Generation.\n
