Results, Confirmation and Clearing

Most offers to study at university are conditional on your exam results. This means that when you receive your results, it is likely that you will know if you have met your offer and we will be able to confirm your place through confirmation.

Confirmation is where universities make final decisions on the conditional offers made to applicants earlier in the year for the firm (first choice) or insurance (second choice) choices you make.

You can check the progress of your application using and if you receive confirmation of your place then, congratulations! It's now time to start preparing for your university journey.

If you've achieved better than expected, missed out on your firm and insurance choices, or simply changed your mind about what or where you'd like to study, then you might want to consider your options through Clearing.

Transcript

Clearing provides an opportunity for applicants to gain a place at a university by applying for courses with spaces still available. It's managed by the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service or UCAS. Whether you're just starting your university application, or you've changed your mind as to what or where you want to study, or you've achieved better grades than you expected, Clearing is a great opportunity to explore the options available to you.

If you missed out on your firm or insurance choice offers, don't panic. Thousands of students like you find courses they enjoy via Clearing every year. Here are our top tips for making a success of your Clearing application.

Firstly, do your research in advance. Don't forget to enquire about student life and accommodation and what it's like to be at the universities you're considering. Make a shortlist before results day.

Follow potential universities on social media to get a feel for them.

You can also register for Clearing updates via university websites. You'll be the first to know when vacancies are confirmed.

Make sure your result day is in your diary and keep the day free to call universities. Clearing opens on the 5th of July, but you'll only be able to apply once you have your exam results.

Plan and research for all outcomes whether you achieve, exceed, or don't quite meet your predicted grades.

Prepare for the Clearing hotlines. Make sure you know what your grades are, what courses you're interested in, and make sure you call. You'll need your UCAS or Clearing ID to hand when you call.

Make sure you're available on results day because universities can't speak to anyone else about your application unless you nominate someone to speak on your behalf.

And don't forget to charge your phone.

Finally, relax and stay positive. Make sure you prepare and there's no need to panic. Don't simply accept the first offer you're made. And once you're ready, use the UCAS Hub to refer yourself to the university you want to accept the offer from. On A Level and BTEC results day, this is available from 1.00pm.

And good luck if you decide to apply through Clearing this year.
