What is fluids mechanics research?

Fluids research builds on a fundamental understanding of the motion of fluids to address a variety of real-world problems. We study flows of air and water – including particles, pollutants, and complex multiphase flows.

The Fluids Research Group is made up of outstanding academics with world leading roles in their fields of expertise. The research interests covering a broad range of themes, including:

  • Environmental fluid dynamics
  • Wind in and around forests
  • Flooding and climate resilience
  • Wind energy assessment - onshore and offshore
  • Turbomachinery and rotor dynamics
  • Urban wind and pedestrian comfort
  • Ground vehicle aerodynamics
  • Sport aerodynamics
  • Aeroacoustics simulations—generation and mitigation
  • Ventilation and clean air for healthy environments
  • Flooding simulation and mitigation
  • River engineering
  • Desalination
  • Wastewater treatment
  • Nature based solutions
  • Solar energy and heat pumps
