Catherine Moakes has over 8 years’ experience in the design and analysis of clinical trials working as a Medical Statistician for the Birmingham Clinical Trials Unit (BCTU).

Catherine's main portfolios within BCTU are trials related to obstetrics and gynaecology with a special interest in pre-term birth.

Catherine has also worked in trials related to Respiratory, Gastroenterology and Hepatology, and is an experienced user of both major statistical analysis software packages SAS and STATA as required by MHRA for analysis of clinical trials.

Biography

Catherine graduated from the University of Loughborough in 2013 with a first class BSc (Hons) degree in Mathematics. She then went on to study for an MSc in Medical Statistics at the University of Leicester.

After finishing her Masters in September 2014, Catherine started work as a Trainee Statistician at the Birmingham Clinical Trials Unit (BCTU) at the University 麻豆精选. Catherine progressed to a Trial Statistician role in December 2016 and later to a Senior Statistician in March 2020.

Catherine’s main portfolios within BCTU are trials related to women’s health (obstetrics and gynaecology), vascular surgery and physical activity. She has also worked in trials related to Respiratory, Gastroenterology and Hepatology, and is an experienced user of both major statistical analysis software packages SAS and STATA as required by MHRA for analysis of clinical trials.

Teaching

  • Masters in Clinical Trials (lecturer on Rationale for Clinical Trials, Key Concepts and Features and Module Lead for Selection, Collection and Reporting of Outcomes module and statistical supervisor for the final research projects)
  • BCTU’s CPD approved “Introduction to Randomised Controlled Trials in Healthcare” course
  • Group tutor for the Masters in Public Health (Epidemiology Statistics and Research Methods - Stata Practical and Advanced Statistical Methods - Stata Practical)
  • Lecturer for the BSc Biomedical Science: Molecular and Integrative Pharmacology

Research

Through her work on several successfully funded NIHR/EME/RfPB grants, Catherine has developed a wealth of practical experience in various clinical trial designs including: pilot and feasibility studies, surgical trials, non-inferiority approaches, cluster-randomised trials and cohort designs. She also has an interest in diagnostic studies, individual patient data meta-analysis, missing data methods and automated output methods.

Other activities

Independent statistician on numerous Trial Steering and Data Monitoring Committees contributing to the oversight and direction of externally run clinical trials.

Member of the pre-term birth CSG.

Statistical reviewer for trials.
