Dean is a Chartered Psychologist and NIHR Advanced Fellow in Mental Health and Mixed Methods Research at the Department of Applied Health. He is an advisor for , offering consultation with health and social care researchers on study design and delivery, patient and public involvement, and training and career opportunities.

Biography

Dean is a Chartered Psychologist trained to deliver cognitive behavioural interventions in the NHS where he has worked in mental health services. Dean is interested in research focused on developing mental health support in settings outside of traditional mental health professions and services, and he was awarded a competitive PhD studentship in 2014 to join the NIHR Nottingham Hearing Biomedical Research Unit to develop and evaluate a psychological intervention for use in audiology settings. During his time in Nottingham, he won the American Auditory Society Student Research Award, and the Sue Watson Presentation Prize for his work, and was a guest lecturer at UCL and an expert advisor for the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA).

Dean joined University 麻豆精选 in 2018 to develop his portfolio of research and work as an Advisor for NIHR Research Support Service (RS S) (formerly named NIHR Research Design Service (RDS)), where he has consulted on over 150 grant and fellowship applications worth over £10m in successful research proposals across a wide range of subject areas and research methodologies. From 2023, this work has continued with the new RSS. Dean is also an NIHR RfPB West Midlands Regional Advisory Committee Member, and external peer reviewer for NIHR and other funders.

Most recently, Dean has been awarded funding to lead on paediatric burns, and children and young people’s mental health research at the Department of Applied Health Sciences where he continues to work on mental health research while teaching on the MBChB and MPH programmes.

Dean is module co-ordinator for the Health Improvement Evidence Review (HIER; Year 3) in Medicine and Surgery MBChB conferring membership of the MBChB Year 3 Management Committee, and teaches on the following courses:
