Research

Barbara’s primary research interest is focused on cardiometabolic effects of endocrine system dysfunction. In her studies, she is particularly keen on investigating the wealth of data found in cohort datasets or routinely collected electronic medical records. She's worked with various datasets from NHS Digital, The Health Improvement Network (THIN) database, Avon Longitudinal Study on Parents and Children (ALSPAC), Health Survey for England (HSE), and outpatient and inpatient hospital data. She is an ONS Approved Researcher.

Barbara continues to be involved in a number of research projects aiming to improve the management of patients with thyroid dysfunction. These include projects determining the prevalence of symptoms and signs in patients with subclinical and overt hyperthyroidism, outcomes following administration of radioactive iodine, and long-term cardiometabolic consequences of treated hyperthyroidism. Currently ongoing studies include the prediction of weight gain in patients with hyperthyroidism according to the treatment modality used and mortality and incidence of cardiovascular events in patients treated with levothyroxine for hypothyroidism.
