Professor Andrew Urquhart is Professor of Finance and Financial Technology and Head of the Department of Finance at Birmingham Business School (BBS), University 麻豆精选. Prior to his appointment at Birmingham, Andrew was a Professor of Finance and Financial Technology and Head of ICMA Centre, Henley Business School and earlier in his career, held a position at the University of Southampton. 

Andrew is an internationally recognised award-winning researcher, mostly working in the areas of Fintech and blockchain.  He has published over 80 peer-reviewed academic papers in over 20 leading journals, such as Nature, Journal of Corporate Finance and the European Journal of Operational Research. His research has garnered over 8,500 citations and he regularly speaks at international conferences, including keynote addresses.  His research has received over £500,000 in external funding and is currently associate editor at British Accounting Review, Economics Letters, European Journal of FinanceFinancial Review, Global Finance JournalInternational Review of Financial Analysis, and Research in International Business and Finance.  He has supervised 9 PhD students to completion regularly writes media pieces mainly on Fintech and the cryptocurrency market.

Biography

Andrew joined Birmingham Business School in 2024 and was previously Professor and Head of the ICMA Centre at Henley Business School.   Prior to that, Andrew was at the University of Southampton where was Associate Professor of Finance and previously Lecturer in Finance. Andrew holds a PhD from Newcastle University where he also received his MSc Finance (Distinction) and BA(Hons) in Economics and Politics.

Andrew’s main research interests are fintech, cryptocurrencies, corporate governance and high-frequency trading. He has published over 80 papers in over 20 leading international journals such as the Nature, Journal of Corporate Finance, Journal of Financial Markets, European Economic Review, Journal of Financial Stability, European Financial Management, Financial Review, Quantitative Finance, British Accounting Review, amongst others.  His research has received considerable attention with over 8,500 citations and he regularly presents his work at leading international conferences as well as writing media pieces.

He has also received over £500,000 in research income and he is also an associate editor at British Accounting Review, Economics Letters, European Journal of FinanceFinancial Review, Global Finance JournalInternational Review of Financial Analysis, and Research in International Business and Finance.  Andrew has received a number of best paper awards at international conferences is also co-organiser of the . He has supervised 9 PhD students to completion with another 5 currently under his supervision. He has, and continues to, provide executive courses to professionals at all levels on Digital Assets, Blockchain and Fintech in general. Previously, he has taught Fintech and Cryptocurrencies and Quantitative Methods for Finance at the ICMA Centre, as well as Portfolio Theory and Financial Markets at undergraduate level and the masters module Quantitative Research Methods in Finance, both at the University of Southampton. He has/is an external examiner of programmes at Durham University, Queen's University Belfast, the University of Edinburgh, SOAS, Birkbeck College. 

Postgraduate supervision

Andrew has supervised many students to completion on topics such as Fintech, Blockchain, Corporate Finance, Asset Pricing and Football Finance, who are now working in academia (such as at the University of Bristol, Nottingham Trent University, University of Sussex) and in industry (such as KPMG, Sky and Lloyds Banking Group).
