Julie Rayes is an Associate Professor in Cardiovascular sciences. She holds a British Heart Foundation Intermediate Fellowship. She is interested in understanding the immunoregulatory functions of platelets beyond haemostasis. Her team focuses on the crosstalk between platelets, immune and endothelial cells to identify targets that limit thromboinflammation during infections and sterile inflammation.

Qualifications

  • PhD in biology and pharmacology of haemostasis and vessels (Denis Diderot university-Paris VII)
  • MA in biology and pharmacology of haemostasis and vessels (Denis Diderot university-Paris VII)

Biography

Julie Rayes completed her MA and PhD at the University of Denis Diderot-Paris VII in France (2003-2007) focusing on the role of Von Willebrand Factor and ADAMTS13 in thrombotic and bleeding disorders. During her first post doc (2008-2010), she established a mouse model of VWD type 2B using hydrodynamic injection. During her second post doc (2011-2014), she focused on the crosslink between coagulation and complement and the role of complement activation in the immune response against therapeutic FVIII in haemophilia A. Since 2014, Julie Rayes focuses on the crosstalk between platelets and immune cells in thromboinflammation.

In 2019, Julie was appointed as a lecturer in Cardiovascular Sciences at the University Â鶹¾«Ñ¡. In 2020, she received a British Heart Foundation Intermediate Fellowship to investigate novel mechanisms of thromboinflammation in haemolytic diseases, with both infectious and congenital origins.

Teaching

Project supervision

  • Biomedical Science BSc

Postgraduate supervision

Julie is interested in supervising doctoral research students in the following areas:

  • How
  • How platelets regulate immune cell functions
  • Understanding the crosstalk between platelet-endothelial-immune cells during infection and sterile inflammation

Research

Research Themes

The main aim of Julie's research is to investigate and target thromboinflammation in infection, haemolysis and sterile inflammation.

Her current research focuses on the role of Damage-Associated Molecular Patterns (DAMPs) and Pathogen-Associated Molecular Patterns (PAMPs) released during infections and haemolysis on the development and resolution of thromboinflammation focusing on platelet- innate immune cell interactions. She is also interested in understanding how the presence of comorbidities alter the response of platelets, endothelial cells and immune cells to DAMPs and PAMPs and identify potential targets to limit thromboinflammation in particular in the presence of cardiovascular diseases.
