Jonathan Ward is Deputy Director of the Interactive Studies Unit (ISU), a Lecturer in Clinical Communication, Lead (with transition handover) for the communication and professionalism strand for Years 1-4 on the Pharmacy programme and was Lead for Medicine Clinical Core 2 communication from 2013 to 2023. He has substantive experience and expertise in the field of clinical communication, developing and applying human simulation (role play) methodology in addition to more traditional lecture and small group teaching approaches. He started working in Medical Education in the mid-1990’s (at hospitals in London, Cambridge and Birmingham).

Jonathan teaches cross-programme (7 programmes within the Interactive Studies Unit remit), has been a coach for high stakes remediation referrals with at risk students since the inception of the service and has supervised MBChB and MPharm elective projects.

At Birmingham Medical School Jonathan is a member of the Interprofessional Education Steering group and the Equalities Committee and at the School of Pharmacy he is a member of the EDI Committee.

Jonathan is a longstanding University 麻豆精选 voting member of the UK Council for Clinical Communication (UKCCC) – 2015 to current. This is a representative body of the communication teaching leads from medical schools in the UK, which enables good teaching practice to be shared and encourages research and development of effective teaching in clinical communication.

He has also been a member of Diversity in Medicine and Health (DIMAH) – 2015 to current – a national collaborative organisation of academics working in healthcare courses across the UK created in 2011 to further the development of diversity teaching.
