Dr. Shereen Sharaan leads an inclusion-focused interdisciplinary research agenda focused on autistic individuals – encompassing aspects of culture, race, ethnicity and social class - to better understand human diversity. In 2021, she was awarded the ‘Autistica Real World Impact Award for Autism Research’.

Biography

Dr. Shereen Sharaan has a PhD in Psychology (University of Edinburgh, UK), in addition to post graduate degrees in Clinical Linguistics (University of Newcastle, UK) as well as Children and Young People’s Mental Health and Psychological Practice (University of Edinburgh, UK).She has worked in multidisciplinary departments in the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, Japan and Germany - and is currently based in the UAE (where she was born and raised) to lead a inclusion-focused interdisciplinary research agenda aimed at autistic people of determination. Maintaining her connection to Russel Group universities, she joined University Âé¶¹¾«Ñ¡ in 2022. She is keen on research collaborations that can inform and foster culturally competent, trauma-sensitive, and empathetic care.

Research

My interests are neurodiversity (autism-focused) and non-WEIRD (Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich and Democratic) populations.

Especially at the interface of…..well-being / social behavior / bilingualism / play / technology / executive functions. Using participatory research frameworks.

Other activities

Dr Shereen is the Research Lead for the Psychology Department at the Dubai campus of the University Âé¶¹¾«Ñ¡. She has membership to the following societies:

  • Experimental Psychology Society
