Dr Nan Chen received the B.Eng. degree in electrical engineering from the Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan, China, in 2012, and the MSc. degree and the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from the University 麻豆精选, Birmingham, U.K., in 2018 and 2022, respectively. Between 2012 and 2017, he has five years of industry working experience as an Electrical Machine Engineer, with several patents issued.
Dr Nan Chen is now with the School of Engineering, University 麻豆精选, acting as lecturer in three Master-level modules (LM Power Systems Operation and Control, LM Power Systems Stability, Control and Protection, and LM HVDC and FACTS) and coordinator of the 2nd year research project for the two-year MSc Electrical Power Systems with Advanced Research programme. He is also the Lab Coordinator of the Department of the Electronic, Electrical and Systems Engineering. He supervises undergraduate and postgraduate students in their projects.
His main research interests include HVDC modelling, BESS, and power systems restoration planning. He has published 10 journal articles including 6 IEEE articles, 2 conference papers and 1 patent issued by EPO since 2022. He gave invited talks such as a presentation on Emerging Technologies Unlocking Offshore Wind Power during IET Powering Net Zero Week Conference in 2024 in Birmingham, UK. He received research grants from diverse funders including The Royal Society. He co-chaired the “Birmingham Decarbonisation Summer School” in 2023 and 2024.
Beyond education and research, Dr. Chen is an active member of the professional community. He has been serving as the reviewer for 12 high-quality international journals including six IEEE journals. He is a member of Working Group, CIGRE B4.95, on “The Development of Power Electronics and Applications in HVDC/FACTS”. Dr Nan Chen also holds several leadership roles in external engagement: currently, he is the Vice-Chair of the IEEE PES UK & Ireland Chapter, and Vice-Chair of CIGRE UK NGN.
Dr Nan Chen received recognition of both academic and professional excellence, including his elevation to IEEE Senior Member in February 2025, the IEEE PES UK&I Outstanding Volunteer Award in November 2024, and the Fellowship of Advance Higher Education (FHEA) in March 2024.
