Dr Jackson is a geriatrician and clinician scientist.  He investigates cognitive disorders in general hospital settings (delirium and dementia) and how these affect both long term cognitive outcomes and the link with the ageing immune system.  He works in the Immunity and Ageing (Immunesenescence) research group within the Department of Inflammation and Ageing.

Qualifications

Clinician Scientist in Geriatric Medicine

  • PhD 2016
  • MRCP Geriatrics 2012
  • Postgraduate Certificate in Research Methods in Cognitive Aging, University of Edinburgh 2011
  • Membership of the Royal College of Physicians London (MRCP) 2006
  • MBBS, University of London 2003

Biography

Dr Jackson qualified in 2003 in London and moved to Birmingham to complete specialist training in geriatric medicine and general internal medicine in 2007, gaining his certificate of completion of training (CCT) in 2012. During his training he was active in the British Geriatrics Society and was chair of the BGS Training Committee from 2009 to 2011.

He was awarded a joint Age UK-Research into Ageing Fund and British Geriatric Society Clinical Fellowship in 2012 with a project identifying dementia in older patients presenting to hospital with delirium.  From this he validated informant tools to diagnose unrecognised dementia in patients with delirium as well as investigating the immune and inflammatory effects of delirium.

Other areas of research interest include acute sarcopenia and frailty and the recognition of delirium in specialist settings such as military medicine.

He is a current of The European Academy for Medicine of Ageing, an Advanced Postgraduate Course in Geriatrics.

Clinically he works as a visiting consultant at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham in ortho-geriatrics (orthopaedic liaison) and in acute general medicine.
