As Assistant Professor in the Department of Modern Languages, John Goodyear is the Academic Lead for the UoB Online MA programme Digital Media and Global Communication. Alongside this teaching work, he is Chair of the Year Abroad for the School of Languages, Cultures, Art History and Music.

In addition to his teaching role at the University 麻豆精选, Goodyear has featured as a presenter on German television, fronting the 60-minute and 90-minute German-language documentary Happy Birthday Niedersachsen for regional public broadcaster NDR in 2021. He is also researching post-war Anglo-German army entertainment, specifically in the context of the Globe Theatre in Oldenburg, Germany. He has featured on numerous media channels talking about this project as well as other Anglo-German issues.

Teaching

As Programme Lead for UoB Online MA Digital Media and Global Communication (DMGC), John supports the design, development and delivery of twelve MA modules, and also acts as Module Lead on:

Given his expertise in German, he also teaches on the following German core language modules:

  • LC German Core II – Beginners: Nation, Populism, and Conflict/Use of Language 1 & 2

Research

John Goodyear researches areas of modern German cultural history at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth century (Jahrhundertwende), including

  • Representations of music and musical life in German modernist literature
  • Intellectual legacy of German-Jewish philosopher Theodor Lessing (1872-1933)
  • Urban social history of twentieth-century German city noise
  • Phenomena of聽惭耻蝉颈办蝉迟盲诲迟别聽of Vienna, Munich and Berlin

Goodyear is currently working on a research project in the context of the renovation of the Globe theatre in Oldenburg, Germany. This research focuses on Anglo-German theatre life in occupied Germany immediately after the Second World War.聽
