Biography

Damian joined the University Â鶹¾«Ñ¡ in January 2020. Prior to this, he was based at the University of Sheffield (from 2014) and at the University of Reading (from 2011). Before moving to the United Kingdom, Damian worked as a lawyer on human rights law in his home country (Argentina) both for a human rights NGO and for a governmental department.

Damian specialises in International Human Rights Law, with a strong interest in the work of international courts and monitoring bodies. Within the last few years his research has focused on both the Inter-American Court of Human Rights and the European Court of Human Rights. Making use of queer theory, his research has explored the jurisprudence of the European Court of Human Rights on sexuality and trans* rights. This research has been published in leading peer-reviewed journals, such as Northern Ireland Legal Quarterly, American University International Law Review, and Modern Law Review, as well as in his 2019 monograph Sexuality and Transsexuality under the European Convention on Human Rights.

Damian has conducted research on the Inter-American Court of Human Rights for over ten years. This research has benefited from the use of both qualitative and quantitative methods to explore different areas of the Court’s work, such as the examination of preliminary objections (Human Rights Law Review) and the compliance with reparations (International Law: Revista Colombiana de Derecho Internacional and Sur – International Journal on Human Rights), while his ongoing research focuses on the Court’s method to quantify compensation following a violation of human rights.
