Dr Wade’s activities focus on cross-border criminal justice co-operation and particularly related developments within the EU. Work focusing on the crimes of terrorism and trafficking human beings and their prevention, investigation and prosecution at a national, regional and global level forms part of this. The genesis of a European public prosecutor’s office and the concept of European citizenship particularly as it relates to defence rights are further focal points. Comparative legal scholarship constitutes an important component of this work.

A key aspect of Dr. Wade’s work is informing policy. Examples of this are the EuroNEEDs study (preliminary report published in 2011 and cited by the European Commission in its Impact Assessment as evidence in its proposal for a European Public Prosecutor’s Office), evidence provided to the House of Lords EU Select Committee and a study delivered to the LIBE Committee of the European Parliament on “Developing a Criminal Justice System for the European Union”. Previously Dr Wade has provided expert advice to i.a. the German Federal and State Committee of Data Protection Commissioners, the Rule of Law Delegation of the OSCE Spillover Mission to Skopje, the international prosecutor’s office of the ECCC, the UNDP’s POGAR conference, the President of the German Prosecutor-Generals’ working group and the Dutch Ministry of Justice.

Dr Wade is the Director of the Institute of Judicial Administration and the Co-Director (Law) of the Centre for Crime, Justice and Policing, a Fellow of the Institute of Global Innovation and a member of West Midlands Police Counter-Terrorism Reference Group.

Research

Dr Wade鈥檚 interests relate strongly to the reality of cross-border criminal justice cooperation and the impact of criminal justice measures on people鈥檚 lives. As a consequence the notion of EU citizenship, the development of a European Public Prosecutor鈥檚 Office and the impact of Counter-terrorism policy are areas of specific focus.

This builds on comparative work on criminal justice structures across the world. Dr Wade has previously done criminological work on surveillance and legal comparative work on prosecution services and criminal justice structures.

Other activities

Dr Wade speaks regularly at academic (e.g. European Society of Criminology Plenary, 2018) and practitioner conferences (ERA, Europol, Eurojust).

She also works as a member of the legal expert advisory board of the NGO Fair Trials International, is a member of the UK European Criminal Law Association and a Fellow of the Daimler-Benz Foundation.
