Professor Neil Hanley became Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Head of the College of Medicine and Health in September 2023. Neil previously was Vice-Dean (Research and Innovation) in the Faculty of Biology, Medicine and Health at the University of Manchester.

Biography

Neil joined the University 麻豆精选 as Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Head of the College of Medicine and Health in September 2023 and is also a practising Consultant Endocrinologist in the NHS.

Neil was first made full professor in 2006 and is a past president of the Association of Physicians of Great Britain and Ireland. Neil was at the University of Manchester from 2008-2023, becoming Director of Research and Innovation at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust in 2016, and Vice-Dean (Research and Innovation) in the Faculty of Biology, Medicine and Health in 2020. During this time, he has also served on the Council of his UK professional body, the Society for Endocrinology, and on the Board of the International Society of Endocrinology.

An expert in early human development and aspects of stem cell biology, Neil has held doctoral, intermediate, and senior clinical fellowships from NIHR or Wellcome, and additional funding as lead investigator from MRC, BBSRC and EPSRC, among others. During the last decade, this has led to outputs in places such as eLife, PNAS, and several Nature journals with over 8,000 citations. His current partnership as chief investigator with Innovate UK and industry leaders has translated collaborative discovery science into integrated novel diagnostics for the early detection of liver disease.

He recognises the critical role of innovation in the Life Sciences and Healthcare. In Manchester, he was a key player in helping to place industries within the university and NHS setting and is now continuing this work focused on healthcare outcomes and economic growth in the West Midlands, for example through and the .

Neil has a passion for education and training, having established an academy in Manchester for those embarking on their own research careers. He directed the Wellcome-funded PhD programme for healthcare professionals for 8 years across the universities of Leeds, Manchester, Newcastle and Sheffield, led the future vision of NIHR’s 2016 national review of training, and is the incoming Chair of the Molecular, Cellular & Physiological Sciences Eary Career Advisory Group at Wellcome.
