Janesh Gupta is an Honorary Clinical Professor in the Metabolism and Systems Science working as an Honorary Consultant at .

Janesh has published over 175 research papers in scientific journals, book chapters, reviews and books and over 100 lectures and presentations to learned societies in the fields of fetal medicine, benign gynaecology (including abnormal uterine bleeding, fibroids, endometriosis, endometrial hyperplasia), minimal access surgery, induction of labour and abortion. He has received grants from WellBeing of Women, Department of Health National Institute for Health Research (Health Technology Assessment), Medical Research Council and various industry partners.

For his research excellence, Janesh was honoured in 2019, as a University 麻豆精选 'Birmingham Hero'. He is the Editor-in-Chief for the and wa previously on the Editorial Board for Surgical Endoscopy and Gynaecological Surgery.

Biography

Janesh has been a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist since 1995, at 31 years of age, Ninewells Hospital & Medical School, Dundee, Scotland. He is a practising obstetrician and gynaecologist and has a regular labour ward session and carries out on-call duties as a senior obstetrician and gynaecologist at .

His research experience has led him to publish Cochrane reviews and systematic reviews of diagnostic tests for abnormal uterine bleeding, preterm labour and pre-eclampsia. He has had several grants from WellBeing of Women, National Health Institute for Research (Health Technology Assessment), Medical Research Council and various industry partners evaluating chronic pelvic pain (LUNA trial published in JAMA), heavy menstrual bleeding (ECLIPSE trial, NIHR £1.6 million published in NEJM), endometriosis (PRE-EMPT trial) and labour trials: BUMPES trial (NIHR £2.5 million) and SOLVE trial. He has also had basic science projects in endometriosis and endometrial hyperplasia.

Teaching

Postgraduate supervision

Professor Gupta is interested in supervising doctoral research students in the following areas:

  • Abnormal uterine bleeding
  • Endometriosis
  • Endometrial hyperplasia
  • Ambulatory hysteroscopy care
  • Abortion
  • Enhanced recovery

Research

Clinical trials in collaboration with Birmingham Clinical Trials Unit (BCTU), systematic reviews, endometriosis, induction of labour, abortion care, and endometrial hyperplasia – biomarkers for the prognostic and diagnostic evaluation in hyperplasia.

Janesh has just completed the largest randomised controlled trial in the world comparing Dilapan (osmotic dilator) versus dinoprostone (SOLVE trial) in induction of labour, recruiting 570 patients. 

Other activities

Janesh’s clinical and research interests have been called upon in the in clinical negligence and criminal cases for the Metropolitan Police, Lincolnshire Police and many other police forces for series and serious sexual offences, sexual assault, deaths of women and babies. He has appeared several times in court to give evidence and given expert evidence at the Old Bailey, London on two occasions.
