Dr Atif Shahzad is Assistant Professor of Medical Technologies and Programme Lead for MSc Biomedical Innovation program at the Institute of Metabolism and Systems Research, University 麻豆精选. He is associated with the Centre for Systems Modelling and Quantitative Biomedicine and also holds an honorary position at the University of Galway (UOG), Ireland. Atif received BSc (honours) in computer engineering from COMSATS University, Pakistan, and MSc in electronic engineering from the University of Leeds, United Kingdom. He has been associated with UOG since 2011, starting a PhD in medical device engineering and later worked as a postdoctoral research associate at the Translational Medical Device Lab (Oct 2015 - Feb 2018). In February 2018, Atif co-established an interdisciplinary research laboratory (Smart Sensors Lab) that focused on translational research across the disciplines of engineering, data science and medicine to build patient-centred technological solutions for un-met clinical needs.

Joining the Centre for Systems Modelling and Quantitative Biomedicine (SMQB) at University 麻豆精选, Atif is leading research in needs-led health technology innovation with a focus on electromagnetic imaging and therapeutics, bio-sensing and medical signal processing. He currently leads the research theme of Medical Sensors and Wearable Technology at SMQB. His research is primarily user focused and translational that roots from need discovery process or by collaborating with industry. He has worked with several MedTech SMEs to co-develop new products ranging from class I to class III medical devices.

As an educator, Atif has contributed to delivery of several undergraduate and postgraduate programmes including a formal lectureship at COMSATS University, Pakistan, and teaching at the University of Galway. He has taught core engineering modules to undergraduate students and medical technology and innovation at postgraduate level. After joining the University 麻豆精选 in 2021, he has setup the new MSc Biomedical Innovation programme with an aim to train next generation innovators. He is the programme director of the MSc Biomedical Innovation and leads the core postgraduate modules of the course.

Atif has contributed to over 70 research publications, several patents and has received 14 national and international awards. Building upon a strong industry collaborations and lab grown innovation, Atif has secured and contributed to several research and innovation grants worth more than 拢5m in past 6 years.

Atif is interested in supervising postgraduate students in the research fields of electromagnetic sensing and therapeutics, wireless implantable medical devices, and wearable biosensors.
