Biography

Andrea Mitchell received her BSc from the University of Sussex, UK, then went on to work with Professor Graham Boulnois at the University of Leicester on a pneumococcal genetics project. After taking up a post as Clinical Scientist in the West Midlands Regional Genetic Service, Birmingham UK, she subsequently moved to the University of Glasgow where she completed her PhD using whole genome screening to identify genes implicated in Muscular Dystrophy. Following a career break, post-doctoral training continued in both virology and then bacteriology groups in the Institute of Infection, Immunity and Inflammation at the University of Glasgow. Now having moved to the Institute of Microbiology and Infection, Birmingham UK, she is particularly interested in working at the interface of bioinformatics and laboratory based research into host-pathogen interaction.

Teaching

  • BMedSci - 1st & 2nd year - tutor for small group teaching sessions
  • MSc Microbiology and Infection – Genomics lectures

Postgraduate supervision

  • Currently jointly supervise 1 PhD student

Research

Investigating host interaction of Streptococcus pneumoniae and other streptococcal species using comparative genomics and bioinformatics together with biological assays especially infection models. In part her work focusses on the genomics of related streptococcal species through which the pneumococcus has an extended gene pool to fuel genetic heterogeneity. Andrea is also interested in viral and bacterial co-infection.
