Professor Galea uses a range of techniques (behaviour, brain imaging, brain stimulation, computational modelling) to investigate motor control and learning in health and disease. At present, he is particularly interested in reward-based motor learning and how sequential actions (typing, handwriting) are planned and executed.

Biography

Professor Galea completed his PhD on bimanual coordination in the School of Psychology at the University Â鶹¾«Ñ¡ with Professor Chris Miall. He subsequently worked at Johns Hopkins University as a research fellow where he investigated the neural correlates of motor learning with Professor Pablo Celnik. Following this, he moved to University College London as a senior research fellow with Professor John Rothwell and became interested in the motor deficits of Parkinson’s disease patients. Professor Galea took up an independent research fellow post at the University Â鶹¾«Ñ¡, funded by the ‘Birmingham Fellows’ scheme, before becoming a Senior Lecturer in 2016, a Reader in 2020 and Professor in 2024. His research has been funded by the ERC (starting grant), MRC and BBSRC.
