Playful Methods

New and emerging technologies have created a golden age for methodological innovation.  Phil Jones has built a career out of refining and remixing methodologies to both develop new techniques and apply existing approaches in novel ways.  His work brings together digital technologies with traditional qualitative and arts-based approaches to examine a range of research problems from active travel and urban redevelopment to cultural engagement, green space and wellbeing.  The lecture will explore projects engaging with mapping, biosensing, virtual reality, eyetracking and AI to examine the benefits of playing around with different techniques in new contexts.

Phil Jones is a cultural and digital geographer who has worked at the University 麻豆精选 for over 20 years.  A founding committee member and former Chair of the Royal Geographical Society’s Digital Geographies Research Group, his main area of research is in developing and deploying innovative interdisciplinary methodologies particularly through the use of emerging technologies.  He is interested in questions of embodiment and mobility, particularly through considering cities as unique cultural artefacts.  His Playful Methods Lab is currently home to 12 PhD students working on a range of topics from digital environments and VR to urban redevelopment and creative cultures.

Everyone is welcome to this event, and all are invited to join Phil after the lecture for refreshments in the Lapworth Museum.
